TEACHERS: Bring poetry to life in your school!
These pages are specially designed to help you and your students to get the most out of the Poetry Archive. There are lesson plans and activities for all key stages and for the inclusive classroom. Poetry can enrich other areas of the curriculum too; there are ideas here for History teachers, and we will be adding material for other subject areas in the coming months.
This is a growing, developing resource, so come back and visit regularly to see what's new. Our plans include a forum for teachers to discuss their experiences, as well as a space where you will be able to create your own teaching materials and share them with colleagues.

W.B. Yeats: the power of imagination
When Angelo Branduardi came to visit the lake isle of Innisfree, Ireland, he was sure to find the beauty of the descriptions, so well translated into music in the Album "Branduardi canta Yeats" published in 1986. He was surprised when he found, instead, a dark rock, only a nude rock, but the power of imagination, that was given by the lyrics of William Butler Yeats, has repainted that isle like a paradise, and so it will be for ever. A miracle.
In this page you can listen to the voice of the Poet talking about this poem, and he "sings" its lyrics: The Lake Isle of Innisfree

SAINT FRANCIS OF ASSISI
...And Saint Francis? Why a layman as me did choose to tackle to a Saint? Before all because Francis is, today maybe more than yesterday, Saint, but also a great poet. A poet who liked to sing. Here is: what pushed me to put in music some of his writings and episodes of his life, drawn of the Franciscan Fonts, that was above all the will to give back a voice to his words, so that they can be sung again. In Francis the man (and Saint) what always fascinated me it's the joie de vivre; his choice of poverty "ever detached of joy". And his being, in this sense, very distant of the faces sad and excited of the traditional monastic spirituality. The image of St. Francis, today, appears to me fragile and, at the same time, extraordinarily vigorous. Living and present. Close to the passions and the big contemporary problems as poverty, the illness, the war, the report with others and with the environment. A face exemplary and exceptional of a completely Christian man in his choice to live the Evangile fully, but who has never stopped to be a man. And, therefore, a true Saint. A Saint poet who liked to sing. ( Branduardi )
